Progetti di contrasto alla povertà AMU

AMU anti-poverty projects

Businesses that join the EoC share their annual profits for three purposes: development projects and assistance for people in need, training in the culture of giving, and business consolidation and growth.

For the first of these purposes, EoC collaborates closely with AMU - Azione per un Mondo Unito ONLUS,

which manages part of the profits pooled by the companies to implement development projects that restore employment and dignity to people in socially and economically vulnerable conditions.

Together we develop and implement projects to start and consolidate productive activities with a high social impact that create new employment for people in vulnerable conditions. In this way, people who would otherwise depend on outside help have the opportunity to improve and enhance their work skills, getting to earn through their work the right compensation that allows them and their families to live with dignity.

Projects always start from the proposals of our local partner associations that, inspired by EoC values, work closely with situations of misery around the world.

The experience gained in the field and the values at the basis of our work have allowed us to develop in recent years what we call "development of communion": a perspective of development based on the ability of each person to give something of themselves and of the goods at their disposal, even in conditions of serious need. This is why in each project we provide specific forms and tools to implement the reciprocity of the gift, a sign of protagonism on the part of the people involved and a guarantee of a genuine path to integral human development.

Below are the projects currently underway:

Social Report

In June 2023 AMU published the Social Report 2022, the tool that aims to communicate with incisiveness and sincerity the life of the 'association, the commitment of members and collaborators, the impacts of its work, but above all to keep alive and spread the tension toward a United World.

#AMU - Ukraine: working with Caritas-Spes to support the people

With donations received through the appeal launched by the Focolare Movement’s Emergency Coordination Team, AMU and AFN, we are primarily supporting Caritas-Spes Ukraine in providing emergency aid to thousands of people forced to leave their homes and flee to the border or take refuge in underground shelters set up where possible.

The actions of war in Ukraine do not stop and among the population there are thousands of displaced people fleeing and many trying to survive between shelters and emergency shelters, where you can receive initial support.

With the contributions collected through the appeal launched by the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement, AMU and AFN are supporting first of all the actions of Caritas-Spes Ukraine, which is providing first aid to thousands of people forced to abandon their homes to flee to the border or to take refuge in underground shelters set up in the footprint where possible.

AMU EmergenzaUcraina 03 ridCaritas-Spes is committed to providing safe shelter, food, medicines and hygiene products, as well as psychological support to some 500 displaced mothers and children housed in its centres. More than 2,500 people are also receiving help from parish branches of Caritas and 14 canteens that are still active in Kyiv, Lutsk, Berdiansk, Kamenets-Podolsky, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa, Vinnitsa and other towns in the Transcarpathian region.

The war images being broadcast every day from Ukraine by international media and stories from our contacts on the ground, like Mira, a Slovenian focolarina living in Ukraine and collaborating with Caritas-Spes, describe the state of emergency of a people under siege, defenceless in the face of the bombardments, thousands lining the routes to the borders or taking refuge in basements and shelters where makeshift beds have been set up, waiting for a hot meal, drinking water and electricity.

At the border with Poland, the queue of people desperate to cross the border is tens of kilometres long. Caritas-Spes in Lviv has organised specific assistance for mothers trying to flee with their children, even tiny ones, in their arms. They need everything, especially hot water to prepare meals or change nappies.

In Odessa which is currently under attack, shelters are being set up, even under the cathedral. Everything is punctuated by the sound of sirens announcing the arrival of danger or its temporary cessation.

In Vinnitsa, a psychologist is organising online training sessions for volunteers and aid workers on providing psychological help in stressful situations such as this.AMU EmergenzaUcraina 02 rid More than 120 people have already taken part in the first session.

The emergency fundraising campaign relating to the war in Ukraine, which is being managed by the Focolare Movement’s Emergency Coordination Team (AMU and AFN), has already raised 100.000 Euros and an initial transfer of funds has been made to the area which will be used to support Caritas-Spes’ activities to provide emergency aid for Ukrainian families.

We are also assessing the possibility of supporting the costs of accommodating the many Ukrainian refugees arriving in neighbouring countries, like Slovakia and Poland, welcomed by the generosity of local families who are opening their homes to them.

Unfortunately, military action has not ceased and, as local contacts confirm, the needs will increase. Ongoing updates on the outreach efforts we are making on the ground are available on AMU and AFN's web and social channels.
