Nairobi: a chronicle of the first day of the EoC School

Enthusiasm, courage, will to change. Young Africans take the EoC's message seriously.

by Lili Mugombozi

150523 Nairobi EoC School 21 ridWe are a new generation that wants to take leadership of the Economy of Communion. We are aware of our lack of experience and maturity but we are also happy to feel that this is exactly our strength: we won't stop dreaming". This is what a young Cameroonian felt like who was there at the International EoC School taking place between 22-26 May at the Mariapoli Piero, Focolare's little town near Nairobi, Kenya. Yesterday afternoon, on the day of the opening of the event, it was impossible not to notice how tangible the energy of a young people is: they are vigorous, full of hopes and aspirations as well as some almost unthinkable dreams notwithstanding the many challenges of their continent.

There are 170 students of economics, development, social studies, entrepreneurship and some who are simply interested; they come from all the Sub-Sahara region and from the whole world: from Chile to Italy, from 150523 Nairobi EoC School 26 rid Brazil to Mexico, from Lebanon, Australia etc.

From the mutual trust that was established spontaneously between teachers and students after the introductions, a deep exchange of reciprocity began right away. Among the greetings coming from various parts of the world, a great applause welcomes the message of the Rector of the University of Cagliari, Professor Maria Del Zompo who, recalling the painful event of the massacre of the young students of Garissa, reminds the young people present of the importance of education facilities, encouraging them in their desire to live and spread the ideals of the EoC.

One of the teachers, Vittorio Pelligra presents the method, the roadmap of the journey to be covered in these days: reciprocity applied: "It is a special school of dialogue and exchange where we will share our insights, our doubts, our plans and dreams - we are all protagonists", and therefore we are all ready and willing to give everything to get everything from everyone! "

150523 Nairobi EoC School 08 ridAnd then a brief history of the Economy of Communion is presented: its birth and development, from 1991 to our day. The question immediately arises: is the EoC is a way for Africa? The dialogue between teachers and participants drags the audience into a contagious enthusiasm.

The young Africans present ask many questions and present their views, fears but also hopes that are - quite understandably - in majority: "How to exert influence on our governments?", "We, the young are tired of being used by politicians as a target in their manifestos. Not only us but the entire world expects new ways of relating ... the EoC is one of the solutions, that's what we feel."

We should also look at the challenges and resources of young people of the continent: the identity crisis in a globalized society, poverty, conflicts and the extended family, the brain drain from the continent and the lack of work, education being increasingly internationalized without thinking about adjusting vocational training to the current needs of the society around us.

This is only the first day of the school, but the young people present who are here to discover new economic categories can already glimpse a better future and cannot wait to return to their countries to share it with as many people as possible.
