ASSISI - Hundreds from over 70 countries around the world have already requested to take part in The Economy of Francesco, which will be held from 22 to 24 September 2022 in Assisi: an event strongly desired by Pope Francis, who has repeatedly invited young people to let their ideas and dreams emerge, for a radical change in the economy. “You are not the future: you are the present”, the Holy Father had said, emphasising how the planet needed and still needs the courage of young people.
The bishop of Assisi, Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino, as chairman of the Promoter Committee, has stressed the need for a radical economic change on several occasions. “First Covid,” explained Monsignor Sorrentino, “and now the tragedy of the war in Ukraine, as in other parts of the world, show us that our system is wrong. Only by building an economy of sharing, one that is more attentive to man than to money, can we lay the foundations for building a world that is less unbalanced and less exposed to tensions, conflicts and wars.” Now, after two years of online and partially in-presence initiatives, finally ‘The Economy of Francesco’ will be held in Assisi to allow young entrepreneurs, economists, and change-makers to discuss and synthesize the work carried out in these past years. Registration is open until 31 March at francescoeconomy.org/it.
“Thanks to St. Francis and the Holy Father, a worldwide movement of young people has been born, and they already represent a force for economic thought and practice: we have been amazed by their participation in recent months both in terms of quality and quantity.”
These are the words of Professor Luigino Bruni, scientific director of the event. “The Economy of Francesco” was born in these two years of pandemic,” adds Bruni, “its very origin was marked by covid so much so that it had to be postponed. And now the war, to say that it is precisely because of these challenges of humanity that we need a new economy, sustainable for the planet, for human relations, for justice. Young people do not want to run away and shut themselves up, but to commit themselves to the true common good".
The numbers of EoF
The Economy of Francesco was born as a result of the invitation that Pope Francis sent on 1 May 2019 to economists and entrepreneurs under the age of 35 all over the world. In the past two years tens of thousands of young people from 120 countries, from the five continents have been involved, mainly from Italy, Brazil, USA, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico, Germany and the UK. Two global online events have taken place in live streaming with over 500,000 views, over 50 webinars, about 25 entrepreneurial projects, 2 online EoF Schools and the first in-person Summer School, an EoF Academy with 18 researchers and 25 senior members. These are some of the numbers of Economy of Francesco, and also: more than 50 internationally renowned experts have been involved (including 3 Nobel Prize winners), numerous scientific publications have appeared and several books are in publication. More than 500 regional events and initiatives, numerous international collaborations (e.g. FAO) and two video messages of the Holy Father that he addressed to the young people of the EoF. To facilitate reflection and action on the challenges posed by the global economy today, 12 virtual thematic ‘villages’ have been created: Work and Care; Management and Gift; Finance and Humanity; Agriculture and Justice; Energy and Poverty; Vocation and Profit; Policies for Happiness; CO2 of Inequalities; Business and Peace; the Economy is Female; Businesses in Transition; Life and Life-styles.
The same thematic villages, where young people will debate, will be physically set up during the three-day event in Assisi. All information and news are available on the event's website and official social media channels: Facebook @francescoeconomy; Instagram @francesco_economy; Twitter @FrancescoEcon; YouTube and Flickr.
