Faria and Irmãos Lda

Faria and Irmãos Lda

Leira, Portugal

The company Faria and Irmãos Lda, founded in 1957, produces plastic molds used for making shoes.

Although it is located at the center of the nation and the shoe industry is traditionally located in northern Portugal, it stands out as the industry leader with $2.7 million in sales and with international customers and commercial partnerships all over Europe, South America, China, and Japan.

The shoe molds are made of polyurethane and therefore they are not biodegradable.
Since they also contain metal, the recycling process is very complex.

To meet environmental requirements and adhere to ecological principles, Faria and Irmãos Lda purchased machinery needed to recycle the molds that customers have to replace so that the molds are not discarded.

They began offering this service for environmental reasons with a large capital investment but gradually it turned into a highly profitable business and a new product line in which Faria and Irmãos Lda is now a pioneer and market leader.
