Techniques for Self Leadership Series:

Tita Datu Puangco of Ancilla Enterprise Development Consulting, a Filipino EOC company, offered the Tita_Puangcofollowing series as a short, free distance-learning course through the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In the series, Puangco gives some simple tips for any entrepreneur or employee wanting to take the initiative in preparing themselves to meet the constant challenges and changes in today’s business world while maintaining a mindful, enthusiastic, joyful and ethical work practice.

She offers advice such as “living the present moment well” in order to face today’s fast-paced, change-driven environment, or practicing Chiara Lubich´s “art of loving” in order to be a team-player. She widens one’s vision of work by posing questions such as “What is the will of God for my life?” and “Who are you here to help?” At the same time, she gets straight to the concrete questions of everyday work life: the value of time, interpersonal relationships, commitment, the importance of continual improvement, and being goal-oriented and focused.

Spurred on by the principles of the EOC, Puangco knows how to translate trust in God, the belief that all are children of one God, and the spirituality of unity into practical, lay-termed, everyday advice for good, moral leadership development.

An EOC Gathering in the Philippines (July 11, 2009)

EOC : When Economy Becomes a Calling…

One hundred forty-four participants – entrepreneurs, managers and employees, professors and graduate students from Manila and surrounding regions -  gathered in the Mariapolis Pace in Tagaytay City last Saturday, July 11. As the letter invitation stated, each was called to reflect and gain a deeper understanding of what the Economy of Communion theory is and how it is lived by EOC enterprises, especially within the context of the present economic crisis.

For the first time in past years of EOC conferences, this gathering was marked by a significant presence of professors, with a group of nine from the Dept. of Commerce of the Pontifical University of Sto. Tomas which included Dean Cabrera and Assistant Dean Calara , together with the department heads of the aforementioned college.

Ancilla and the economic crisis

by Renato and Tita Puangco

Ancilla Enterprise Development Consulting is the consulting and training company we founded 18 years ago. My wife, attending a meeting on Chiara’s launch of the economy of communion felt called to respond to it. She just resigned from her job as Vice President of Bank of Philippine Islands and took on a professorial job at the Asian Institute of Management. Since I had a steady job at that time I quickly agreed to her proposal for us to set up a training and consulting company.

It was mid-year 2008 when we started to feel the start of the economic crisis. We continued to have a steady flow of projects and programs except that the clients, specially a number of multi-nationals surprisingly started to lengthen the repayment period to 30 and even 60 days. This was strange since typically training and consulting is something that is promptly paid upon completion of the service. Since we are also strategic planning consultants, we constantly monitor local and global trends. In fact for December we gifted our clients with a tea box and a CD entitled “Weathering the Storm”. It contained all our findings of the impending crisis and what actions they can begin to take. We knew the trends and just like other companies, we started to brace for a slow-down.

Bangko Kabayan

Seeking a Common Solution

by Teresa and Francis Ganzon

The US sub-prime mess hardly created a ripple in the local banking industry. However, when a group of rural banks owned by the Legacy Group declared a bank holiday towards the end of December 2008, the rural banking sector, particularly where there were Legacy banks located, were severely affected.

The largely rural depositing public began questioning whether in fact, the rural banks they were patronizing were stable or would also close or go on bank holiday.

Bangko Kabayan has a 13-branch network in the province of Batangas, with about P1.2B in deposits, as of year-end 2008. We are a 52-year old institution and had enjoyed a good reputation in the communities we were present in.
