L'Impresa civile (The Civil Enterprise)
An Italian path towards the market economy

Egea, Milano 2009

In this age of economic and financial crisis many things need to be rethought if we want to imagine and build a market economy and a model of sustainable development. Among these "things" is, undoubtfully, the business enterprise. It´s not enough that it produces quality, income, occupations - not even that it pays the right taxes. It´s always more evident that the business institution is called to "something more" which can truly render it a friend to the city in such a way that it would be considered as a builder-element of the civil fabric.

The idea which inspired the book is the Italian tradition of civil economy, originating in Humanism and in then in seventh-century Naples. Today, this tradition still offers suggestions and new ideas on how to imagine a civil business enterprise, which, while remaining a business (and not neccessarily becoming a non-profit), would still be a place and instrument of uncivilization and well-living.  This goes beyond the argument non-profit/for-profit, typical of the anglo-saxon tradition, and also recuperates the Italian tradition of business economy.  What stands out in this context is the analysis of the entrepreneur as a social figure that, different than a spectulator, assumes the characteristics of a civil entrepreneur.
