Giving Trust

We received this experience from an entrepreneur who takes his inspiration from the EoC, and we want to publish it here for everyone

Giving Trust

By Simone Pirani

We have a business of real estate agents, with 3 full-time employees and one part-time employee. A few years ago, we began trying to apply the EoC principles in our company. Professor Zamagni said during the 2009 Summer School, "who has received, now sow!"  We´re a small business, and we haven´t been affected by the crisis, so we try to apply this important indication.

In July, we found ourselves in the position to help Francesco (an invented name), a construction entrepreneur from Calabria who recently went bankrupt. After awhile, Francesco told us about the possibility of buying some of the goods from his failed business from the courts. He could give us some useful advice to do so. First, it was important to verify that Francesco was not linked to any Calabrese association "not exactly in line with the EoC". This done, we arranged the transaction and traced down the financiers and final clients of some of these goods.

In the Market for Humanity

Papal Correspondence: Six experts interpret what 'Charity in Truth'says about the issues of our times. One is Amy Uelmen:

In the Market for Humanity (overview of the Economy of Communion)

By Amy Uelmen
published in americamagazine.org on Nov.30,2009

In recent decades a broad intermediate area has emerged between the two types of enterprise. It is made up of traditional companies which nonetheless subscribe to social aid agreements in support of underdeveloped countries, charitable foundations associated with individual companies, groups of companies oriented towards social welfare, and the diversified world of the so-called ‘civil economy’ and the ‘economy of communion’ (No. 46).

It is rare for a specific project to be given a favorable mention in a papal encyclical, but “Caritas in Veritate” seems to present an exception. When Pope Benedict XVI described the “broad intermediate area” between nonprofit and for-profit sectors with the buzz-phrase “economy of communion,” some connected the dots with the Focolare movement’s network of businesses in which profit serves as “a means for achieving human and social ends” (No. 46).

Echoes from the EoC meeting in Belgium, from October 9-11

Echoes from the EoC meeting in Belgium, from October 9-11

By José and Chantal Grevin

091009_Belgio_1 We´re arriving after three days at Mariapolis Roselaar in Belgium, 30 km west of Brussles, where we were able to visit the EoC industrial park with it´s two businesses. For us, who usually meet at the Mariapolis in Arny, being able to spend these days there was a true discovery. We saw things that, for us here, are still only a desire in our heart. There is a center for meetings, from the beautiful and pure architecture to the harmony with the people who welcomed us and put themselves at our disposal. And despite our different cultural backgrounds, we were able to get to know one another deeply, in a warm climate of reciprocal trust and communion.

Luigino_Bruni_Brendan_WilsonLuigino Bruni, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Milan-Bicocca and coordinator of the International commission of the Economy of Communion (EoC), was invited to participate in two conferences in the US from October 15 to 17. This visit marked a step forward for the ongoing dialogue with North-American scholars and those who have been following with interest the development in the EoC project. “We need the breadth of this vision which brings together theory and practice to be able to stay on track with Chiara Lubich’s initial inspiration” commented Joan Duggan, entrepreneur in New York and president of the North American Association of the Economy of Communion.
