A Lexicon of Social Well-Being

Luigino Bruni

Palgrave Pivot, April 2015

A Lexicon of social well being ridWe are living in a long transitional period and a paradigm shift that started well before the financial crisis of 2007, one that is very likely to last for a long time. Therefore we must quickly learn how to live well in the world as it is today, including the realm of work. We need to learn a new vocabulary of economics and markets that is more suitable to understand the world in this era of globalization and financial capitalism. There are some fundamental words of social life that need to be rethought, or even rewritten, if we want civil and economic life to be 'good' and just. Right now we are conducting bad economics, partly because we are thinking and speaking badly about economics and civil life. Without a doubt, the following terms are among them: wealth, poverty, entrepreneur, finance, happiness, esteem, merit, bank, common good, work, justice, management, income distribution, profit, rent, corporate property rights, indignation, and capitalism. We urgently need a lexicon for a new economic and social well-being.

Structures of Grace

The Business Practices of the Economy of Communion

John Gallagher,Jeanne Buckeye

New City Press, December 2014

Structures of grace ridStructures of Grace - The Business Practices of the Economy of Communion was written by John Gallagher and Jeanne Buckeye about the first and largest socially-responsible small business network in the world based on a work lifestyle of communion - The Economy of Communion (EoC).

The book highlights the practices of North American businesses that are part of the EoC worldwide network, whose beginning was inspired by Pope John Paul II's encyclical Centesimus Annus, and later referred to by Pope Benedict XVI as "...a broad new composite reality embracing the private and public spheres, one which does not exclude profit, but instead considers it a means for achieving human and social ends," and that "views profit as a means of achieving the goal of a more humane market and society"  (Caritas in Veritate, 4:46).

The Genesis and Ethos of the Market

Luigino Bruni

Palgrave Macmillan, September 2012

The_Genesis_and_Ethos_of_the_market_ridIn this book Luigino Bruni analyses the market and its ethos, illuminating the history of capitalism and highlighting the need for a new ethical direction. In the last two centuries, the present vision of the market economy that can be called capitalism has produced remarkable economic, technological and civic results; but today, in these times of crisis, it has become obsolete, because it is about to exhaust its innovative and civilising force.

The Wound and the blessing

Luigino Bruni

Economics, Relationships, and Happiness
New City Press, 2012

Wound_blessingThe crisis that market societies are undergoing is essentially a crisis of relationships. It originates in the illusion that the market, through the actions of an “invisible hand” operating in impersonal market relationships, can present us a good common life exempt from the possibility of being wounded by the other.

New Financial Horizons

Lorna Gold

The emergence of an economic communion
New City Press, 2010

New_Financial_HorizonsCelebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Economy of Communion, Gold examines the origins and substance of a promising alternative to the current globalized economy. The Economy of Communion, which started within the Focolare Movement in 1991, involves a worldwide network of solidarity among some 800 firms that together constitute a vibrant business community based upon the values of sharing, caring and justice. Drawing on the experiences of an international sample of business and community leaders, particularly from the U.S. and Brazil, Lorna Gold explains the historical and philosophical origins of this fascinating yet little known global community.“The Economy of Communion was cited by Benedict XVI [in Caritas in Veritate] as a promising form of intermediate activity between for-profit business and classic non-profit institutions,” wrote journalist John L. Allen Jr.

Special Issue of Impresa Sociale

The Special Issue of Impresa Sociale on the EoC, dedicated to Chiara Lubich, has been published

Special Issue of Impresa Sociale

Impresa Sociale - July/September 2009

Impresa_sociale_copertina_ridImpresa Sociale is a monographic journal, edited by Euricse, the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Sociale Enterprise, in Trent. Having begun more than 19 years ago, the journal has brought ahead a visionary and pioneering mission: to promote, accompany and help the complex reality of non-profit in Italy to self-evolve. The journal has followed all the stages of social and entrepreneurial growth in this sector, becoming always more important. It is now one of the sector´s major points of reference.

The latest issue to press, N.3 of 2009, is entirely dedicated to the Economy of Communion. As Luca Fazzi writes in the journal´s editorial, "This issue of the Journal, dedicated entirely to the topic of the Economy of Communion, wants to provide important stimulus for reflection, considering within which boundaries can one legitimately speak about social businesses and highlighting, at the same time, how the challenge of doing social business is that of contaminating the non-profit world with that of the market."

Ethos of the Market

L_ethos_del_mercato_BruniLuigino Bruni
Ethos of the Market
An introduction to the anthropologial and relational fundamentals of the economy

Bruno Mondadori, Milano, 2010

In the last two centuries, capitalism has reached extraordinary economic, technological and civil results, playing an important role in transforming society. Howver, it has lost on the playing ground of fraternity. That is why, today, capitalism has become obsolete. The crisis at the beginning of the third millenium (from terrorism to the environment, from finance to energy) shows with extraordinary strength that the market economy is using up every force of social and incivilizing change, because we´re paying the consequences in the area of individual freedom with the coins of environment and social relationships.

La crisi economica - appello a una nuova responsabilità

La crisi economica - appello a una nuova responsabilità (The Economic Crisis - an appeal for new responsibility)

Città Nuova, Roma, 2009
pp. 96, € 6,00

Città Nuova Publisher

The crisis that we are living is not only economic or financial. It collides with the model of development that we have followed for the last two centuries, pushing us to a new and radical reflection on capitalism. From different disciplines - economy, politics and theology - the authors outline a way of reading the profound reasons for the crisis. Though recognizing the goodness of the market´s values, they single out the concept of going beyond the economic culture founded on individual-centeredness and profit outside of the rules, and that of returning to an economy of the ethics and values of gratuitousness and reciprocity as the way out of the current situation.

Dizionario di Economia Civile

Dizionario di Economia Civile (Dictionary of Civil Economy)

The civil dimension of the economy in which the market is an open space for reciprocity and solidarity.

Città Nuova, Rome, 2009

pp. 832, € 65,00

see introduction (in italian)

Through three guiding principles - theoritical backing, experiences and people (scholars, workers and entrepreneurs) - the Dictionary intends to give "voice" to the civil dimension of economy.

Starting from the conviction that market, business and economy are also in themselves places of gratuitousness and fraternity, civil economy proposes a humanism with various dimensions. It´s one in which market is not fought against but lived in as a space open to the principles of reciprocity and solidarity, and therefore capable of buildling up the city. An economic science and praxi that make room for the principle of gift within (and not beside) economic theory.
