“One Company is Not Enough”

Changing the World, One Business at a Time

by Lorna Gold

published in charityandjustice.wordpress.com on 02/06/2015

150528 Nairobi Congresso EdC 20 rid ridWe are living in times not dissimilar to the Reganite and Thatcher years of the 1980s, when the market logic of economic growth was definitely in the ascendance. The resurgence of market dominance brings with it very serious, potentially destabilising down sides. Can markets, as currently structured, ever deliver solutions to the gross inequalities which are increasing exponentially? Can markets solve the global existential threat that is climate change? Can markets deliver on human rights in the fullest sense? As things stand, I have to say no. It just isn’t possible. Businesses lack the foundation of a social contract, which only democracy can deliver. As the recent Trócaire report “Where aid meets trade” shows, there are serious issues of accountability at stake.

One company is not enough!

Yesterday the EoC's 5th International Congress ended at the Mariapolis Piero (Nairobi, Kenya): "extraordinary" was the most frequently used word in the feedback received. The concrete commitment of entrepreneurs for the young.

by Lili Mugombozi

150531 Nairobi Congresso EdC 74 ridOne company is not enough, that's what more than 300 entrepreneurs from 41 countries on 5 continents stated, in conclusion of the 2015 International Congress of the EoC in Nairobi, in the midst of dances, songs and colours: "We are a people of merrymaking," exclaims Luigino Bruni.

In order to look to the future, the last morning saw the Congress turn our very special gaze to the new generations. From the very start, Anouk Grevin managed to involve those present: "When a child is born, the whole community takes care of the child who is born is everyone's", an applause breaks because this statement represents one of the most cherished values to African peoples (" it takes a whole village to raise a child" - the editor). Then she explains: "With the young people who attended the International EoC School, we have experienced some wonderful dreams".

Nairobi, 4th day: Economy of Communion: in Poverty and Wealth

The fourth day of the EoC Congress at Mariapolis Piero (Nairobi, Kenya): the programme rolls on fine despite (or thanks to?) some unexpected events

by Alberto Sturla and Norma Sànchez

150530 Nairobi Congresso EdC 51 ridThe day began with a blackout occurring just as we were entering the room, which "forced" young people to extend their initial musical entertainment. Without amplification it was easier to involve the audience in a loud chant, accompanied only by the rhythm of the drums. It was thrilling!

Once power and poise were regained, the room was prepared to listen to the topic of the day. Today's topic for discussion was poverty and wealth from the perspective of the Economy of Communion, following the presentations of Lorna Gold and Luca Crivelli.

Happy birthday, EoC!

The third day of the Congress is the 24th birthday of the EoC, too: there is a party to celebrate at the Mariapolis Piero (Nairobi, Kenya).

by Alberto Sturla and Norma Sànchez

150529 Nairobi Congresso EdC 47 ridToday is a special day: the EoC turns 24! Indeed, it was on 29th May 1991 that Chiara Lubich launched the idea of a new economy to a Brazilian audience - at least in the first instant - who seemed more perplexed than persuaded. Yet the challenge was met: today in Brazil there are about 150 companies and 400 EoC entrepreneurs and students and researchers from around the world are meeting in Africa to look at the future together. Who would have thought back then, when the Mariapoli Piero did not even exist, that one day the EoC congress would be held in the heart of Africa?

Video - Happy birthday, EoC!

Today, on 29th May 2015, the Economy of Communion turns 24!

There is a great party today at the Mariapolis Piero (Nairobi, Kenya), celebrating the 24th birthday of the EoC! It is a party in a truely African style: singing and dancing together while cutting the cake as is customary. But it isn't just one cake - there are many, very many new cakes being made during these days spent together!! Happy birthday, EoC and all those in it!!!

2nd day of the EoC Congress: for a culture of communion

The second day of the EoC's International Congress at Mariapoli Piero (Nairobi, Kenya) is dedicated to the culture of Communion.

by Alberto Sturla and Norma Sànchez

150528 Nairobi Congresso EdC 42 ridMariapoli Piero (Nairobi, Kenya), 28 May 2015 - If yesterday showed the way that the EoC should follow for a new African economy, today and the future are intended to provide the tools to follow it quickly.

The main theme of the day is presented by Genevieve A. Sanze, with her presentation entitled: "The culture of communion from the perspective of the charisma of unity". Starting from the all African concept of "Ubuntu", which more or less means "I am what I am because of what we are all together", Genevieve tracked something that community solidarity, which is also typically African, has in common with the charisma of unity of the Focolare Movement."

Nairobi: the EoC is at home here

The EoC's 5th International Congress started at the Mariapoli Piero (Nairobi, Kenya) this afternoon

by Alberto Sturla and Norma Sànchez

150527 Nairobi Congresso EdC 01 ridNow that more than 400 people, mainly from Africa and Europe (but representing all five continents) have come together here in Nairobi for the opening of the Fifth International Congress of the Economy of Communion, one can see how the two-year preparation and hard work of the International EoC Commission and the Pan-African EoC Commission have borne fruit.  So many things have happened in two years. Some bad things, too. The attack in Garissa has brought the contradictions of Africa to the attention of the world. The young victims of terrorism, with their desire to improve the world through knowledge, are the first participants in the Congress takes on a new meaning just because of the brutality of extremists. Because "fratricide should be answered by fraternity". As it has been said.

Nairobi EoC School: the goal of "reciprocity applied" has been reached

The International EoC School Nairobi 2015 ended yesterday with dances, thanks, promises, sharing initiatives, responsibilities, dreams and plans.

by Lili Mugombozi

150526 Nairobi EoC School 44 ridCertificates were handed over to the students by Professor Aloyse Ayako, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), in a very warm and colourful atmosphere. "On behalf of CUEA, I would like to thank you for your efforts in recent days, for trying to enter into the dynamics of the EoC with your intelligence and your life. I also thank your teachers who have given you this opportunity”.  Prof. Ayako, a former senior official at the Central Bank of Kenya, has trained many economists, managers and teachers of the country: "After getting to know the values of the EoC from closer, I can say that the EoC is the road to the world ahead of us."

The third day of the school: a journey into the EoC corporate culture

What is an EoC company? Entering into the heart of the programme on the third day of the school.

by Lili Mugombozi

150524 Nairobi EoC School 37 ridA journey into corporate culture. Today's session also starts in a very original way. Starting from the morning, entrepreneurs take turns at the microphone or through video messages, telling their personal stories about the adventures of their respective companies from the perspective of the culture of the Economy of Communion.

From Italy to Germany and to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, entrepreneurs fascinate the audience by the integrity with which they live their dreams. On the one hand it is about alleviating poverty and living the culture of giving, but on the other it is extremely important to aim at building relationships of trust with suppliers, workers and consumers of their products and services, and also with their competitors...

EoC, a great dream: the second day of the EoC School

An unusual teaching method: to share one's life and dreams. In the Mariapolis Piero (Nairobi, Kenya) the EoC School is in course.

by Lili Mugombozi

150523 Nairobi EoC School 30 ridThe EoC, a big dream, this was the issue around which the young people gathered at the Little Town Piero, Kenya on Saturday, 23 May in the second day of the International EoC School: the number of participants has grown since young people from Argentina, Hungary, Egypt and from various African countries also joined the group.

Right at the start of the day, after the warm welcome to those who did not attend the previous day, Steven, a young Cameroonian takes the microphone and says to his peers: "I have a big dream that I never want to lose sight of: never stop dreaming ... if I stop dreaming it is all over for me - and you?" Between the laughter and applause, observing the back of the room I sense that these young people are really smart. They may be dreaming, but the projects they have in minds are very concrete and precise.
