Economy of Communion

A new culture

Magazine edited by Alberto Ferrucci

A four-monthly periodical conceived to connect all those who adhere to the project launched by Chiara Lubich for an economy of communion in freedom.

notiziario-edc-28 It is an economy for people who find self-fulfilment in relationships with others rather than in rational egoism. It is an economy based on a ‘commitment to grow together’, rather than on a struggle to dominate, being willing to risk economic resources, inventiveness, and talents in order to share the Gospel’s culture of giving.

This culture of giving is proving to be more and more fundamental in directing humanity of the twenty-first century in its search for new ways to face the environmental challenge and to avert new atrocities among men caused by economic globalization.

Formy

EoC told to not only to kids...

We are proud to present Formy, in Italian "Formica", the new EoC mascot. Ecco_Formy_200Formy came about from the precious collaboration with Vittorio Sedini and will be a regular feature on the site aimed at kids, teachers, and educators, which will come out at the same time as our newsletter.

Formy constitutes a further initiative of the Youth Project and the EoC, which began a couple of years ago, intended to raise awareness of the Economy of Communion to the younger generations. Through the comic strips, Formy will try to explain EoC in a simple and direct manner not only to the kids…

We like Formy very much and hope it will be also appreciated by our loyal readers to whom we propose to spread and make it known in the places where each one works. Let us know what you think!

The “Identification Card” of the EoC

1. The Economy of Communion (EoC) is a movement that involves entrepreneurs, workers, directors, consumers, savers, scholars, economic workers, poor and citizens, families, and was launched by Chiara Lubich in May of 1991 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Its aim is to contribute, according to the Charism of Unity, in giving life to businesses which they feel as their mission to eradicate social injustice so as to help build an economic system and a human society of communion, where, imitating the first community of Jerusalem, “no one among them was in need” (Acts 4,32-34).

2. The EoC is an international movement coordinated by a Central Commission and by Local Commissions linked to the Central Commission on the basis of the Principle of Subsidiarity.

3. Those who adhere to the EoC commit themselves to living the values and culture of communion in the light of the charism of unity, both as individuals and in the organizations in which they work, making themselves its animators and promoters. They commit themselves particularly, with ideas and actions, so that the culture of communion, giving and reciprocity penetrate always more into the world of economy and inform it at all levels.

4. The backbone of the EoC is represented by businesses or productive organizations of various juridical forms, even non lucrative (non-profit, social and civil businesses, cooperatives, associations, etc.) that decide to adopt in their praxis the culture of communion and the values of the EoC.

5. The EoC businesses commit themselves in creating new wealth and jobs with creativity and innovation, and sharing of profits for the goals of the EoC Project, even beyond the environment of its interested carriers.

6. Based on the originating inspiration, the EoC gives life to Business Parks, located in the Small Towns of the Focolare Movement. The business parks, signs of the project’s witness and concreteness, are an integral part of the EoC, and make the project complete and mature in a certain region or Country.

7. The request to adhere to the EoC by individuals and institutions should be addressed to the Local Commission, which gives approval as long as the following requirements are maintained:

(a) serious commitment by the entrepreneur/s to begin a journey of communion with the Local Commission and with all the local and international EoC movement, not only as a single person but as an expression of the business community

(b) sharing of the project’s goals and the purposes of the Charism of Unity of which the EoC is an expression

(c) openness to allot business profits, when they are present, according to the three goals of the project, which are: (1) a concrete help to the poor, (2) the formation of “new men and women”, (3) development of the business and/or distribution to associates

(d) inspires the governance of the business by fraternity, according to the document “Guidelines for Conducting an EoC Business”

(e) understands and lives in relationship with persons in situations of poverty on a level of dignity, substantial equality, respect, reciprocity and communion

(f) considers the business and/or action as a place or instrument to reduce poverty and injustice, both at the local and global level

8. The EoC also gives life to a movement of thought and ideas, in a genuine dialogue with the contemporary culture and with civil and social economy locally and globally.

9. The EoC cooperates with the various initiatives of the Churches, of various religions and of civil and political society, of which it feels to be a vital expression and an instrument of unity.

10. The EoC contributes to “that all may be one” (John 17:21).

“God acts always” is the motto which Chiara Lubich gave to the Polo Lionello “to remind ourselves of the value which God gives to work, to man´s own creative ingenious”.  It´s written on a plaque (sculpted by Benedetto Pietrogrande) hung near the building´s reception area.

polo-lionello_layoutThe Italian business park, inaugurated in October of 2006, is located in Incisa Val D´Arno, a few kilometers from the international small town of Loppiano (near Florence).  The naming of the building after Magistrate Lionello Bonfanti, once responsible for the small town´s relationships with the local institutions, was in order to highlight that the building´s “vocation” is not only economic but “civil” as well.

In fact, the 20 businesses (see below) there today present themselves as a community open to the region that has welcomed them and of which they are a living part.

Already from inauguration day (see photo of the inauguration) this characteristic has stood out through the presence of numerous civic and academic personalities, leaders of associations and institutions, among which are the then President of the Italian Council, Romano Prodi.

The dialogue, intensified during the visit of Dr. Claudio Martini, President of the Region of Tuscany and regional councilor of international cooperation Dr. Massimo Toschi, continues to be fruitful.

It is a very intense dialogue, involving various types of associations, particularly cooperatives that often hold their own meetings in the halls of the pole.
The center is also often full with people of the academic and formational circles, including university lecturers, visits from high schools, internships for entire classes, and specialized courses given by the EdiC SPA (the association which runs the building), which is accredited by the Tuscan region.

The 5640 shareholders of the business park Lionello Bonfanti are witnesses of how many have believed in the project and have in some way wanted to make themselves protagonists despite the fact of not being entrepreneurs.  A photograph of them would well describe the “poor but many” which Chiara Lubich once spoke about while describing the origins of the Economy of Communion.

The EdiC spa was instituted on October 13, 2001, and owes its name Lubich who was its first shareholder (see photo of the inauguration).

Today, the administrating council has ten members who will hold their office until December 31, 2008.

The park is also indebted to the many who offered their own sufferings and even their lives for its realization. In the name of all of them, we mention Iliana Pieri, who was the first to agree to insert her business there.  The seminar hall has been dedicated to her and her husband Giovanni.  (see photo of the inauguration).

36.jpgproductive business parks: Ginetta Business Park

Polo_Ginetta_ingressoThe Ginetta Business Park has its headquarters near the town of Santa Maria, Igarassu (PE), and is the second Economy of Communion Business Park in Brazil. It owes its name to Ginetta Calliari, co-founder of the Focolare Movement, for the role that she had on the development of EoC in Brazil. Ginetta Calliari in fact, immediately adhered to the EoC proposal and was deeply convinced of the project’s response to the complex social problem of the country.

The Business Park’s main mission is to promote and give visibility to the Economy of Communion (EOC), welcoming small and medium-sized companies that adhere to this new style of economic action, whose spirit is based on the enhancement of human potential, in a context of freedom and participation. It is, therefore, committed to reducing inequality with efficient business principles of profitability and social-environmental responsibility..

A little bit of history:

In 2002, the first act for the birth of the Business Park: the constitution of the Company: Polo Empresarial EdC do Nordeste S.A..

In 2003 a lot of 8.3 hectares was purchased and in 2005 they invest in the construction of the Business Park. In 2007, the inauguration of the first warehouse. Today, two companies are in business: the Prodiet Farmacêutica Ltda, specialized in trading and distribution of medical products, and From the Road Ltda, studio of bags distributed throughout Brazil and beyond.

The Business Park structure is composed of, in addition to two warehouses and at the headquarters an administrative office, a fully equipped 25-seat room and two additional offices available for service companies. The third building, under construction, will bring the Business Park area to 900 m2.

Today the Business Park, in addition to initiatives for a wider audience, hold training sessions for entrepreneurs in the Northeast and moments dedicated to those who live and work in companies linked to the Economy of Communion in the region.

The current shareholders of Ginetta Business Park are 1,110. But how can we forget the strength and courage of the first 113 shareholders who brought this project forward, often with great sacrifices? In this slide show are some photos of the Business Park and the people who work there:

Ginetta Business Park news:

Industrial Parks: Giosi Guella Business Park

Portugal - Abrigada

The home of the Portuguese EoC entrepreneurs is born in the small town of Arco – Iris, some 45 km from Lisbon

cidadella_Arco_Iris

In 2000, a group of EoC entrepreneurs together with some friends of the existing Arco-Iris  bought a piece of land adjacent to the small town, with the goal of building an EoC business park there. Chiara Lubich gave it the name "Giosi Guella Business Park", after one of her first companions, and construction of the business park began in 2003. On November 6, 2010, Giosi Guella Business Park was finally  inaugurated, and this "dream" will became a reality.

Logo_Ecnal_ridThere are three businesses operating in Giosi Business Park. ECNAL, a firm that does business consulting on various levels - quality, environment, security and property management - was the first business to be headquartered there in 2008. Instead, two other businesses have started operating there just two months ago: SAGEC 18-20, which offers accounting and work medicine services, and REDCAP, which works in recycling plastic and cardboard.

Logo_SAGEC_18_20

The moment of inauguration on November 6, 2010 was preceeded by a morning formational gathering for entrepreneurs. Among those present were Luigino Bruni, Leo Andringa and Alberto Ferrucci of the EoC International Commission.

Logo_REDCAP_rid
In the afternoon, about 250 people were present, among which some local and national authorities, including the mayor of Alenquer (the village where the small town is located), university professors and a few members of Parliament. The program unfolded in a solemn atmosphere: a greeting from the co-directors of Arco Iris, the introduction by Luigino Bruni, an interview with Luis Felipe Coelho and some of the entrepreneurs that own the first businesses that located to the Giosi Business ParkEcnal18.20 Sagec and RedCap. The well-appreciated presentation by Manuela Silva, an economist who has studied the EoC for years, underlined the vital importance of this reality, highlighting Chiara Lubich's prophetic vision. "When the Economy of Communion is put into practice," she affirmed,"it is destined to be a far-reaching light in the darkness of modern society, like that of a lighthouse in the midst of the ocean."

101106_Polo_Giosi_05_ridFinally, a celebration at the inauguration of the Business Park, with the unveiling of the sign that says "Giosi Guella Business Park" by the mayor and a visit of the various locations and businesses in the business park - an hour of simple but very joyful celebration. We left the small town of Arco Iris with the certainty of having participated in an historical moment, for Portugal and the EoC in the world.

Polo_Giosi_02The inauguration of a business park is always an awaited day...as well as a new starting point for the Economy of Communion in a nation. Abrigada, where Arco-Iris and the business park are, means "protected" in Portuguese. It's called so because of the mountain of Montejunto that protects it from the winds. On top of that mountain, radio signals are sent to spread news and to connect all the surrounding countries. We would also like that, one day, this business park "protected" at base of Montejunto will quietly spread a new style of life, renewed by the Gospel, that will form new men and women towards a society that has universal fraternity as its goal.

72Istituto Universitario Sophia

Masters and PhD. In Principles and Prospective of a Culture of Unity

(concentration in economics)

Sophia promotes itself as a laboratory of formation and research in which the home_sophia1.jpgprofound links between life and thought, study and experience, are reconnected.  It´s an university institute that looks towards the future, attentive to the petitions of our time so that the man of today and tomorrow – as Chiara Lubich loved to say – becomes always more a “man of the world”.

Sophia offers a formation open to everyone, as well as its incarnated fields of study which can become a competitive edge in the field of economics and in particularly in business.

Sophia is an instrument of formation of those “new people” soaked with and trained in the “culture of giving” and reciprocity, without which it is not possible to actualize an Economy of Communion.  That is why a substantial part of the EOC profits go to financially sustain Sophia.

Logo Prophetic economy 200 rid cat#ProfeticEconomy is much more than a three-day event, it is a journey undertaken by associations and movements that intend to give answers to the cry of the earth and the poor together. Our world is facing an ecological and social crisis. Climate change and increasing inequality are fuelled by unjust economic structures, short-term policies and outdated aid practices.

Many people around the world believe passionately in human development and sustainability, working tirelessly to change the rules and demand justice. It is time to unite and be more than the sum of our parts.

#ProfeticEconomy is going to be an experience and the beginning of a process: our intention is to stimulate inventiveness, confrontation and creativity in search of sustainable and collective solutions to the social and environmental problems of our time, with particular attention to the poorest.

Theses

Year after year, the number of theses written on the Economy of Communion project continues grows.

Their topics show the progressive amplitude of the studies done on the EoC project, with particular attention to the various economic and organizational aspects that arise from putting the person "at the center".

The theses can be consulted at: http://www.ecodicom.net link.gif
