Beim “„Miteinander für Europa”” durfte die Ökonomie nicht fehlen. Im Sitz des Europäischen Parlaments, an der Place de Luxembourg, im Saal Alcide De Gasperi (Mitbegründer dessen, woraus die Europäische Union entstand), versammelten sich Experten, Politiker, Unternehmer, Jugendliche und andere Staatsbürger zur Veranstaltung „Ökonomie – Sache des Gebens“. Sehr ambitioniert, denn im irren Lauf der Finanzwelt ist die Orientierung am Gemeinwohl verloren gegangen.

Hendrik Opdebeeck, Professor für Philosophie und Wirtschaftswissenschaft an der Universität Antwerpen und Mitglied des EU-Ethikrates, erläuterte zu Beginn der Arbeit in sieben Punkten das Konzept der Verantwortung verbunden mit Freiheit, Verschiedenheit, Begegnung mit den anderen: Verantwortlichkeit der weltweiten Institutionen, Rechtswesen, Grenzen der Wirtschaft und des Marktes, Globalisierung.

Mario Draghi has also launched an appeal for a «pact for growth,» Angela Merkel is also becoming convinced that it’s a matter of necessity. It is becoming increasingly clear to many – and thank goodness, also to many influential people – that to base ourselves solely on the «fiscal pact» is not only too little, but runs the risk of further deteriorating the economic situation of the more fragile European nations. Growth, therefore: but growth of what? Without embracing the radical thesis, and at times naive (above all, in the  therapies that it proposes) of the so called de-growth, we need to be aware that the most important question on growth is really «of what?». When we think of growth, we normally think of growth in GNP.

On 30 May, Professor Luigino Bruni will hold one of the main talks at the theological-pastoral Congresses, at the Fair of Milan, in the context of the VII Would Meeting for Families. The theme he will address will be: “The family, work and celebrations in today’s world.”

There is a new form of hunger that is striking our consumer and capitalistic societies: hunger for time. One of the reasons one time at  the root of the prohibition on lending money with interest in return (or usury), was the conviction that time was not a good at human beings disposition, but belonged to God.

And therefore, if time belongs to God, and if in a money loan what changes between the giving of the loan and its restitution is only time (that has passed), and if I ask for interest on it, its as if I was making a profit on time.

From the precious collaboration with Vittorio Sedini, a new comic strip is born on the EoC website

We are proud to present Formy, in Italian "Formica", the new EoC mascot. Formy came about from the precious collaboration with Vittorio Sedini who, for many years, attracted many reader of Città Nuova with his comic strips that are always funny, witty and simply full of wisdom. As of today, Formy will be a regular feature on the site aimed at kids, teachers, and educators, which will come out at the same time as our newsletter.

Formy constitutes a further initiative of the Youth Project and the EoC, which began a couple of years ago, intended to raise awareness of the Economy of Communion to the younger generations. Through the comic strips, Formy will try to explain EoC in a simple and direct manner not only to the kids…

We like Formy very much and hope it will be also appreciated by our loyal readers to whom we propose to spread and make it known in the places where each one works. Let us know what you think!
